India is a land of diversity and that is visible in terms of its food and food produce too that includes vegetables and fruits. And one such fruit that you might not have come across on a regular basis is wood apple or kothbel, or bael fruit. A blogger, Sohani Eats, shared a glimpse of the fruit which is used in Odia cuisine.

Take a look.

"The most unique and unseen fruit of India. This fruit is known as wood apple. We call it Kaitha in Odia and kothbel in Hindi. It is sour in taste and goes really well when combined with basic indian spices and aromatics," she said.

According to her, the 'super fruit' is used to cure digestive problems like dysentery and diarrhoea. It is also known to be a good remedy for constipation and helps relieve discomfort. It also has laxative properties. Apart from the above, it is beneficial for kidney and liver health because it can remove toxins.

The round, hard shelled fruit, have a soft pulp and a peach-y aroma, described registered dietitian Garima Goyal.

She also said that since bael fruit is rich in phytochemicals such as lupeol, eugenol, limonene, citral, rutin, and anthocyanins, it might induce "chemopreventive effects". "It supports intestinal biological formulations and protects the digestive system from ulceration, reduces the frequency of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and intestinal spasm," Goel said adding that as a diuretic, wood apple aids in digestion and relieves constipation.

According to Goyal, kothbel contains anti-inflammatory properties. "This soothes inflamed organs. The high protein content in fruit helps in faster healing of body, and helps in building stronger muscles. Bael fruit can cure liver problems as they are good source of beta-carotene. They also contain thiamine and riboflavin, which are known as liver health boosters," mentioned Goyal.

How to use it?

One can either cut the rind of the bael fruit with a knife and easily access the aromatic pulp, or one can choose to either peel it like an apple or cut it into half and scoop out the flesh. If the rind is harder, one may need to knock it a few times with the backside of a heavy knife. Once the rind cracks, you can gently pull it apart.

Since the fruit is sweetish sour in taste, the pulp of the ripen fruit is eaten as such or with sugar. "It can be used for making juice, jelly, chutney," said Goyal.
